Infinite slowness

Infinite slowness, 2020-ongoing
This body of work spans the artist’s research of the last three years, during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. Elena Redaelli explores material transformation processes, inquiring into relational dynamics and communication methods between the artist, the public and the environment. Infinite Slowness is an ongoing research project investigating stone’s vitality and ability to move, reproduce, remember and communicate. Time assumes a semantic value to explore the entangled life of humans and the environment in various ways of existence and interconnections. Slowness is the leading mode of action to activate material transformation processes and comprehend the human symbiotic relationship within our planet's ecological balance. Rocks are here and now present as they are, layered stratification of time, encasing the memories of remote pasts, millions of years before humans started making things and making love. And, of course, rocks are also living archives of information from the Anthropocene. In these times of great acceleration and globalisation, rocks mutate with their inner tempo. We are not immediately aware of their transformation, but that's an unstoppable, ongoing process. The rocks slowly transform themselves while keeping internal equilibrium between their constituents. While the human body is ephemeral and temporary, the stone is durable and stable, performing its calm mutations. There is much to learn from the ancient, wise rocks! The study maps ways of approaching the environment towards a deeper understanding and possible connection through a methodology based on cross-disciplinary experimentation: sculpture, installation, collective actions in space, video, and sound have been used. These approaches, activated by humans, seek collaboration with the environment down to its tiniest components. Non-human animals and things in multiple places, spaces, and realities are involved in an evolving trans-creation.
